BMI Table For Adults

This table shows the recommended body weight ranges based on BMI values provided by the World Health Organization(WHO). It applies to both men and women aged 20 years and above and is widely used as a general guide to assess healthy body weight.

BMI Range(Kg/m2)CategoryWhat it means
Below 18.5UnderweightYour weight is below the recommended range for your height
18.5 – 24.9Normal WeightYour weight is considered healthy for your height
25 – 29.9OverweightYour weight is higher than normal
30 – 34.9Obese
(Class 1)
High body fat level
35 – 39.9Obese
(Class 2)
Very high body fat level
40 and aboveObese
(Class 3)
Extremely high body fat

Note: BMI should be used as a starting point, not a final judgment. It is best to combine your BMI result with other factors such as diet, physical activity, waist measurement, and medical advice to get a more accurate understanding of your health.

BMI for Men and Women

The BMI formula and the WHO weight categories are the same for all adults aged 18 and over. A woman and a man with the same height and weight get the same BMI, and the same category. What differs is what that number can mean, because body composition varies between people, and on average between men and women.

BMI Calculator Women

On average, women carry a higher percentage of body fat than men at the same BMI, so a “normal” result does not describe body composition in itself. Fat is stored more around the hips and thighs before menopause, and more around the abdomen afterward. Several life stages affect how you should read your result:
Pregnancy: do not use BMI to judge your weight during pregnancy. Doctors use your pre-pregnancy BMI to guide recommended weight gain.
Menopause: hormonal changes can shift fat toward the waist even when your BMI stays the same, so check your waist size too.
Breastfeeding and postpartum: weight changes gradually, so compare results over months, not days.

BMI Calculator Men

On average, men carry more muscle mass and tend to store fat around the abdomen. This means a muscular man can show a BMI in the overweight range with a low body fat percentage, while a man with a “normal” BMI can still carry a lot of belly fat. Waist size is a useful second check, since the risk starts to rise at about 102 cm (40 in) for men.

Male vs Female BMI Calculator

Feature MaleFemale
FormulaSame BMI formula Same BMI formula
Muscle Mass Usually higherUsually lower
Body Fat Lower body fat percentageNaturally higher body fat percentage
Fat Storage Mostly around the abdomen Mostly around the hips and thighs

BMI works the same for men and women, but body composition differences can affect the results.

BMI Calculator for Kids and Teens

Children and teenagers should not use the standard adult BMI formula, because their bodies are still growing and change quickly with age, sex, and puberty. Instead, doctors use BMI-for-age percentile charts, based on CDC growth standards, to compare a child’s BMI with others of the same age and gender. This percentile method, along with the BMI Z-score, gives a much clearer picture of a child’s growth pattern than a single BMI number ever could. If you’re checking a child or teenager’s weight, use our Child & Teen BMI Calculator instead, which is built specifically for ages 2 to 18.

BMI Formula

The BMI formula is a straightforward method for estimating whether your body weight is proportionate to your height. It is calculated by dividing your weight by the square of your height. In the metric system, BMI = mass (kg) ÷ height (m²), while in the imperial system, a conversion factor is used. Adolphe Quetelet introduced this formula, and it is widely used by health organizations to classify weight categories and assess potential health risks.

Metric Units:

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ height (m²)

US Units:

                     BMI =Weight (lbs)703 ÷ height (inch²)
Matric: 78 ÷ (1.77 × 1.77) = 78 ÷ 3.13 = 24.9 (Normal weight)

US: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²
Example: 703 × 172 ÷ (69.7 × 69.7) = 120,916 ÷ 4,858 = 24.9 (Normal weight)

BMI Ratio

BMI Prime, also called the BMI ratio, compares your BMI with the highest value of the healthy BMI range. It is calculated by dividing your BMI by 25, which is the upper limit of a healthy BMI according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The result shows how far your body weight is from the ideal range of weight. A BMI Prime of 1.0 means you are at the upper limit of a healthy weight. Values under 1 indicate that you are in the normal or underweight category, and values over 1 mean that you are overweight or obese. BMI Prime is, therefore, a simple and helpful way to know what your weight is and to monitor your progress over time.

The BMI ratio/prime formula is:

                         BMI Prime = BMI ÷ 25

The table below shows a person’s weight classification based on their BMI prime:

Obese Class II35 – 39.91.4 – 1.6Very high body fat
Obese Class III≥ 40> 1.6Extremely high body fat

Limitations of BMI

  • BMI does not directly measure body fat percentage.
  • It cannot distinguish between fat and muscle mass.
  • Athletes and individuals with a muscular build may have a high BMI but low body fat percentage.
  • People with a normal BMI may still have unhealthy body fat levels.
  • BMI does not take into account age, gender, or ethnic differences.
  • It does not measure body shape or fat distribution in the body.
  • Pregnant women may get inaccurate BMI results.
  • BMI should not be used as the only method to assess overall health.
  • Other factors like diet, fitness, lifestyle, and medical history are also important.
  • Doctors usually combine BMI with other health measurements for better evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A healthy BMI for most adults is between 18.5 and 24.9.

No, BMI does not measure body fat directly, so athletes or muscular people may have a high BMI but still be healthy.

No, Children and teens use BMI percentile charts based on age and gender.

The BMI formula remains the same, but men typically have more muscle mass, which can impact the results.

A BMI calculator helps both men and women check whether their weight is healthy according to their height.

Checking your BMI every few months is sufficient for most people, unless advised otherwise by a doctor.

No, BMI only compares height and weight. It does not directly measure body fat.

Yes, pregnancy can increase body weight, so BMI may not always give accurate results during pregnancy.
